How to use daily Affirmations to empower your mindset

Whatever we language, we experience.

Basically, the words we use and the conversations we have, define the meaning or beliefs we make about our world. These beliefs narrate the script of our self-talk. The tone of this inner dialogue reveals our attitude or mindset. Our mindset will determine the quality of our reality. The more positive our mindset the better we feel.

With greater self-awareness around our language, we can see how we are either keeping ourselves stuck or moving forwards. This is because our inner language is constantly programming our mind and nervous system. The body responds to every word we say.

I liken this process to Google. Think of the way Google works. You type something into the Google search bar and its algorithm suggests all relevant searches. If, for example, you type the word happiness into the Google search bar, you will receive images, articles, videos, songs and anything else associated with happiness.

Our subconscious mind, which programs 95% of our behaviour, works the same way. If you are focusing on failure by saying to yourself, I cannot fail or don’t mess up, or what if nothing works out, then your subconscious Google search is focusing on all the past times you may have failed as well as anticipating all the possibilities of future failure. Either way, you are not focusing on the present moment- you are past-focused or future-focused. You are also problem-focused as opposed to solutions-focused.

Developing the habit of using positive affirmations is the best way to refine your search, and RE-program your mind. Positive affirmations are ‘I am’ statements you say to yourself that direct your thoughts in the direction you want to go in. So, if you say to yourself, I am successful, you are now directing your Google search towards success. The subconscious mind will then focus on all the memories and associations stored on success and, in turn, produce more positive feelings.

Here are 5 HOT TIPS to creating self-empowering affirmations:

Every word counts.  Take a look at the following list of character strengths. As you are going through the list select the top 10 words that describe the ideal feelings you want to feel every day. These virtues represent the mindset you are generating. Make sure that every word lights you up inside. If you feel a sense of upliftment, enthusiasm or excitement as you read it, then it is right for you. If your feelings remain more neutral or feel drained, then chose another word. Repeat this process until you have 10 empowering words.  You will be left with an assortment of virtues such as compassion, courage, wisdom, energy, focus, commitment etc. Your affirmations could be:

‘I am compassionate, courageous and committed to my own success.’

Be disruptive. Every time you notice yourself thinking negative thoughts, STOP them in their tracks and redirect your thoughts towards your positive affirmation. Every time you disrupt your habitual thoughts you alter the neural pathways of your mind and create new pathways to support positive behaviour.

Repetition is the key. The mind learns through repetition, so fake it until you make it. Practice your affirmation first thing as you wake up in the morning and as you go to bed at night. Also, repeat your affirmation every time you feel stressed or anxious throughout your day.

Consistency breeds competency. The more you follow this pattern of disrupting negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones and repeating them daily, you will develop a consistent daily practice that begins to feel like second nature.

Feeling is healing. It is important that your affirmations are not only a mental or cognitive activity but are also felt in your body. This means you embody the experience. As you say your affirmation, begin to notice sensations in your body. As you feel the positive vibes in your body, you begin to heal buried pain and blocked emotions. As you heal you become whole again. You will then vibrate on a higher frequency and begin to manifest a greater level of abundance in your life.

“I have the strength to succeed.” These words are useful whether you need to empower yourself to work towards abundance, romance, a rich career or something else entirely. This is a quick affirmation to use when you’re feeling a little wobbly.
